When to store vs sell

To store or sell, that is the question. It’s the “Paper or plastic?” of all who aren’t currently but soon wish to be clutter free. And we’ve got some advice to help you decide!

  1. Value Matters. You don’t need a to be an Antiques Roadshow appraiser to have a general idea of what is and isn’t valuable. If it’s old, authentic, and in good condition, particularly furniture and art, someone somewhere wants it. If it’s not, don’t waste time trying to sell it, and don’t take up space storing it. Pitch it!
  2. Have a Heart. It’s okay to feel emotional ties to objects. Gifts from loved ones contain memories worth cherishing. The difficulty comes in admitting when something is sentimental but not worth keeping. Rugs almost always fit this criterion. As do piles of blankets and hand-sewn quilts. Ask yourself if walking on a tattered relic or likely-not-using a musty old blanket is actually preserving good memories. If not, don’t feel bad about moving on.
  3. Venue Options. Nowadays, you can sell anything anywhere. Gone are the days of needing a brick and mortar building to exchange goods and services. Today, there is a plethora of online and phone apps that require no more than a picture, a product description, and a ZIP code to sell to anyone in the world. Beyond the mega-sites like eBay and Amazon, consider OfferUp, LetGo, or Trove Market to sell your stuff. They’re all free, easy, and safe!
  4. Plan for the Future. If you’ve conducted a full-scale assessment, decide what you want to save. Often times, we have items we want and will use again in the future, but we just don’t have space for them now. That’s why we’re here. Whether you’re holding onto heirlooms for future generations or looking to clear out space until you relocate, The Box offers safe, secure, and affordable storage options.
