When to store vs sell

Our houses are filled with a vast collection

of different items and, at some point, many of these items that we accumulate are no longer being regularly used (if they ever were) and we need to get them out of the way. While the quick and easy solution is just to sell or give away all of them, this isn’t always the best idea since you may need some of them at a later date so it might be a better idea to simply hold onto some of this extra stuff and put it in storage.

Items that you should consider storing away rather than getting rid of include:

Books

If you are an avid reader then you have probably accumulated a significant collection of books and it’s possible that you don’t have enough space in your bookshelves for all of them or only want to have ones you read regularly on your shelves. These books are something that you want to store away since if you keep them, then you will almost certainly end up reading these books again. You can keep these books in storage in order to ensure that you can get them out again when you want them.

The easiest place to store them is to keep them in a box (or several boxes) in your basement or attic or in a spare room that you don’t use for anything.

Holiday Decorations

Holiday decorations (tinsel, ornaments, and stars for Christmas trees and so on, for example) are an excellent example of when storage is the preferred choice over selling or giving away your extra stuff. These kinds of items will almost certainly get yearly use and so should be retained so that you don’t have to find more decorations again every single time of the year.

The best way to do this is to just store all your decorations in a single box, provided you have few enough that this won’t make the decorations hard to separate from each other when you need them and store it somewhere out of the way like in a basement or attic.

Tools

If you have an excessive number of screwdrivers, hammers, wrenches or other similar tools then it is a good idea to store away some of them and only keep out what you need. While these tools can be helpful, having too many just means that you have something taking up unnecessary space that you aren’t using.

However, you do probably want to keep some of these tools at home since these extras will probably end up getting some use on future projects even if this isn’t a regular occurrence so it is a good idea to keep them for future use.
